Construction Update (Ha Ha Ha)

The gaping hole remains in my bedroom.  I think they are making some progress with the construction.  The new exterior wall in the kitchen went up.  I met the architect and the carpenter at the house Monday afternoon and came up with the kitchen design.  At this point there will not be an island, I think the space would be too crowded.  I am striving for an eclectic, authentic kitchen.  Here is the picture serving as my inspiration:

I love color and I want a happy space!  The architect assures me it will be beautiful!  I am having trouble finding just the right tile for the back splash.  I may need to order it from the states and bring it in Kathleen’s container from Seattle.

We still don’t have our visa extension.   The plan is to fly to Quito one day this week with our attorney.  I am converting from a work/business visa to an investment visa.  We have been waiting to get a final deed from one of the properties I own.  Should be straightforward, but nothing is that easy here, especially when it comes to official, bureaucratic paperwork.  Fingers crossed things go smoothly!  Eamon is excited he will get to miss school for a day!

I intend (I think) to install security system(s) at the house.  I got the first bid this week.  It included an electric ‘deterrent’ for the top of the exterior wall as well as an alarm for the house itself.  I am undecided whether both would be overkill.  I will be getting a couple of more bids to compare prices and will consult with my Cuencano friends to make sure I am not being quoted in ‘gringo’ dollars!

Someone has been shooting off a cannon close to our building, the loudest we’ve ever experienced.  Not sure if there is an event happening;  it is probably just another Sunday morning in Cuenca!

About cuencamom

Trish and her son Eamon have finally settled in Cuenca, Ecuador! I am a widow and Eamon is my incredible 12 year old son. We are natives of Seattle, WA. We visited Cuenca at the end of 2009 and fell in love (at least I did!). We bought a beautiful apartment overlooking the city and are now permanent residents as of July 2011. We are trying to look forward and not back. Our journey the past few years has included many challenges and tragedy but we're well on our way to a new life in a beautiful city. The adventures are just beginning!

  1. Love all the bright colors! It looks like it will be a happy place. Slow down and enjoy it. You are retired, right?

It’s harder than you think to slow down, but I’m trying! I’m so used to juggling many balls at the same time! My biggest resolution for 2012 is to finish the house, take on no more projects and focus on getting healthier and in better shape! How are things up there? I sure miss you….

Trish, I like the kitchen plan. It will be a happy place. As to the alarm, I figure that’s what your dog is for. At least that’s one reason I’m bringing Ginger down with me. The great thing about you having a house with a yard is that you can just let your animals out. I’ll be standing on the curb outside of my condo, shivering while waiting for her to “go.” Am thinking of bringing down my 15 year old, full-length alpaca coat for just that purpose. It’s so long I can throw it over my pj’s in the mornings. XXOOLT
