Trish and her son Eamon are almost expats, it should (hopefully) be official in July 2011.  My job went away at the end of 2010 and unless a miracle happens we are headed south of the border to Ecuador.  I am a widow and Eamon is my incredible 11 year old son.  We currently live in Seattle, WA with our many dogs and cats.  We visited Cuenca at the end of 2009 and fell in love (at least I did!).  We bought a beautiful apartment overlooking the city and hope to be permanent residents by the summer of 2011.  The disappearance of my job has sort of forced an ‘early retirement’ which is a bit of a mixed blessing.  We are trying to look forward and not back.  Our journey the past few years has included many challenges and tragedy but we’re hopefully on our way to a new life in a beautiful city.  The adventures are just beginning!

  1. Enjoyed your posts. Gala and I were in Cuenca in Nov 2010 and are preparing for our return when we sell our home in Electric City, WA. Can you give us a range for the cost to move your container? How big and moving time would also be helpful. Could you refer us to your coordinator or service provider? Thanks and all the best!

      Hi Dennis and Gala,

Thanks for your email and positive comment! I’ve never done a blog before and am still learning the tools so it’s pretty basic. I am working with Relocation Services of Ecuador. Their email is relocationservicesecuador@gmail.com. I just got an email from them yesterday and they have a new phone number and a new person answering the phones – Lulie Lawry,
Office phone: 507-401-2026. The costs from Seattle range from $7.5-11K depending on the size of your container. You have the option of a 20′ or 40′ container. One of the company owners, Charles Barrett, lives in my condo building in Cuenca. My condo neighbors and friends used them to move their stuff from Pennsylvania and were very pleased. They are really responsive and I’m happy with them so far. Charles thinks I will only need a 20′ container but I’m not so sure. I have a small loft in el centro that I bought pre-construction in 2009 and I am bringing all of the appliances for that place in the container along with other stuff. I think I need to be disciplined and only bring a 20′ container. It will take 4-6 weeks for the container to get to Cuenca. If you’d like, I can forward you the email with their documentation, just let me know. I will be renting out my Seattle house and plan on storing some boxes in my garage. There is alot of stuff that my husband left as well as memorabilia from his parents. I decided to hold onto it for Eamon and his brother (my stepson). Is your house on the market already? I look forward to meeting you in person! Trish

Congratulations on your upcoming move to Cuenca.
We are planning on retiring to Ecuador, hopefully later this year.
I have a friend who has just lost her husband in Dec. and has two boys 11 and 14.
I have been telling her of Ecuador. If you could e-mail me, I was wondering if you
would be interested in corresponding with her about your experience and how you
came about choosing to move to Ecuador.

Thank you! I will email you later his morning after I take Eamon to school. I am very sorry for your friend’s loss, I would love to correspond with her. We lost Andy in September 2009 after a battle with ALS and it still seems surreal on many levels. Thank you for reaching out for her.

We are enjoying your blog — you and Eamon must be in Cuenca for Spring Break now!
We moved here from Silverdale, WA (near Poulsbo and Bremertron) after 23 years there ….you are going to love Cuenca! Hopefully after Eamon learns Spanish, he will
find it a happy place to grow up. People are incredibly friendly and kind here ……and the climate is so much less WET than Seattle! We hope to meet you at a later date, when you move here! Best of luck with your move! Sherry and Hank

We would love to meet you in July and chat about dogs and schools. Will write more tomorrow when I get batteries for my iPad keyboard. I wrote you a shoot reply earlier but don’t know if it got sent…

Pleased to (virtually) meet you! Can’t wait to meet you in person. I hadn’t logged in since before we went to Cuenca so I apologize for the tardy response. I am really excited about living in Cuenca, it is a bit surreal but we are almost there. My goal is to be there no later than July 10th. Eamon has a follow up appointment with his audiologist at Children’s on the 7th (soonest we could get in) and we will fly south after that. I am making the reservations this weekend. My plan is to get Eamon a Spanish and math tutor as soon as we arrive. How cool that fellow western Washingtonians are in Cuenca!! Looking forward to meeting you!! Trish

My husband and I are talking about Ecuador and would love to talk to people who have made the move. We used to live in Silverdale ourselves! Would you be willing to chat with us via email?

I have neglected my blog, sorry about that. I just posted a new epistle and will be a better poster and responder in the future, I promise! Can’t believe we are down to <2 months, my oh my!

  5. I see the last post here was last May..so hope this gets to you! I live in Sequim, Wa and am just learning about Cuenca! I am very seriously considering moving there! So any help you can give with advice would be very appreciated. I see you had a house built, would love to know more about that since that is also our plan. How many dogs did you bring with you..and did you bring a cat too? I plan to bring a dog and a horse..maye a couple of cats too! Not sure. I hope to hear from you soon……….Sharon Burris

    • cuencamom dijo:

      Hey Sharon,

Thanks for reading! I am sending you an email in the next few minutes. I am really happy to help you as much as I can! My parents lived in Sequim for 25 years! Stay tuned!

Trish, first of all, congratulations on “finally” moving into your new home! There is a House God after all!
on another subject, I was sad to read that someone would be so selfish to advise a fellow American to move into such a deplorable place — and good for you guys to take the bull by the horn and want to rectify that situation. We’ll be there soon and I’ll help, because that’s what I have been doing with our military here in Germany for the past 13 years. I am a “sponsor” i.e. I assist in everything from buying the first gallon of milk on the economy to sleeping on a great mattress for the next 3 years! Would love to be part of something so crucial to create smiles!

We’ll stay in touch, we should leave Germany the first week of October!
    best wishes/elke

I am interested in what documents you needed to enroll Eamon in Santana. I am moving to Cuenca with my three children in the end of July 2013 and wish to have the needed records in order to save headaches once we are in Cuenca. Did you have the school records translated or were they accepted in English?
    Thanks for your help!

  8. Hey there I am so happy I found your weblog, I really found you by mistake, while I was
